Spring is an ideal time of year to visit the Cowra Japanese Garden. The Cherry Blossoms are in abundance and signal the arrival of warmer weather. The blossoms come at slightly different times dependent on the winter weather but they are usually at their best from late September for around 3 or 4 weeks. A wide variety of uniquely themed events, set in the magnificent garden is what awaits visitors to the annual Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom) Festival to be held on the weekend of Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September.

Sakura Matsuri is a much loved event in the Cowra cultural calendar. It is a time when the beauty of nature in full bloom and the centuries old traditions of Japan are combined; and you are invited to enjoy the result.

Now in its 21st year at the Cowra Japanese Garden, Sakura Matsuri has developed into a showcase of Japanese arts, crafts and cultural activities. Be part of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, learn the secrets of Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), calligraphy or bonsai, watch the skill of the judo experts or see real Sumo wrestlers in action; these are just a few of the activities you can enjoy during this year’s Sakura Matsuri festival.

Saturday 25 September is the Sakura Matsuri Family Fun Day. As the name suggests it’s a day specifically designed to appeal to every member of the family. Whether you are eight or 80 there will be something at the Japanese Garden designed to interest you. The Family Fun Day is followed by the annual Sakura Matsuri Dinner. This year’s Dinner will be held at the Cowra Services Club commencing at 7pm. Tickets are limited and are priced at $55 each. They can be obtained by contacting the Cowra Japanese Garden on 02 6341 2233.

Sunday 26 September features a Service of Respect at the Australian and Japanese War Cemeteries. This service acknowledges the strong bonds of friendship that have developed between the people of Cowra and Japan since the tragic Cowra POW Breakout in August 1944. A midday luncheon at the Mill Cellar Door, with tickets priced at $29, is the last event on this year’s Sakura Matsuri program. Tickets for the luncheon are available from the Cowra Japanese Garden.

The Cherry Blossoms flower long after Sakura Matsuri has finished and for those wishing to visit the garden at quieter times we recommend visiting in early to mid October when you can enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere.

Normal admission charges apply on the day
